Strategies for Ocean Noise Mitigation in the Salish Sea 

Summary for Response to the Public Consultation by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Regarding ‘Draft Ocean Noise Strategy for Canada’, October 2024.

Among other points, there is not sufficient attention to address the following urgent needs:

Creation of noise refugia,
stationary noise by anchored vessels, cumulative noise from different sources, links to climate effects.

The catastrophic collapse of Baltimore’s Key Bridge in March 2024 was caused by only moments of power failure on the container ship Dali.

Loss of propulsion by cargo ships is more common than generally assumed.

What are the risks of out-of-control cargo ships in the narrow passages in the ecologically sensitive marine ecosystems of the Gulf Islands, and what can be done in response?

Rockfish Recovery in the Southern Salish Sea: 

Are Conservation Areas Impacted  by the Proximity
of Cargo Ship Anchorages?


The Southern Gulf Islands may be the only place in the busy waters of the Southern Salish Sea where a large number of existing Rockfish Conservation Areas (RCAs) could be isolated from traffic by marine shipping and anchorages. Rockfish Recovery in the Southern Salish Sea may require such steps to achieve the objective of the management plan under SARA (Species at Risk Act).
